Neck pain is a common issue among older adults, often affecting daily activities, posture, and even balance. As we age, natural changes in the body can lead to discomfort and stiffness in the neck, making movement more challenging. Understanding the causes of neck pain and how to manage it can help improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of falls.
How Forward Head Posture Increases Fall Risk
Forward head posture does more than cause neck pain—it also affects balance and stability. When the head moves forward, the body’s center of gravity shifts, increasing the likelihood of instability. This posture reduces the ability to make quick postural corrections, increasing fall risk, particularly in older adults with pre-existing balance challenges.
A key measure used to assess this risk is the Occiput-to-Wall Distance (OWD) test. This test measures how far the back of the head is from a wall when standing upright. A greater distance indicates postural misalignment, which has been linked to an increased risk of falls. Addressing forward head posture can significantly enhance stability and reduce fall risk.
A physiotherapist will ask you about your current level of activity and any particular problems you’re having. They will also examine your joints to assess your muscle strength and the range of movement in your joints. Exercises and activities to meet your individual needs.
- Degenerative Arthritis (Osteoarthritis) – Wear and tear on the joints in the cervical spine can lead to inflammation, stiffness, and pain.
- Loss of Muscle Strength – Weakness in the neck and upper back muscles reduces support for the spine, increasing strain on the joints and soft tissues.
- Forward Head Posture – With aging, many individuals develop a forward head posture, where the head shifts in front of the shoulders. This increases strain on the vertebral column and surrounding muscles, leading to chronic pain and tension.
- Loss of muscle flexibility-Reduced mobility in the cervical spine can limit movement and contribute to stiffness and discomfort.
