Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
What is BPPV?
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo – BPPV, is vertigo caused due to calcium crystals called otoconia/canaliths in the inner ear falling out of place. When patients change their head position, like rolling over in bed, or bending and looking up, the displaced otoconia causes the patient to experience vertigo such as room spinning, nausea, unsteadiness and even falls.
How can Physical Therapy help BPPV?
Repositioning the crystals back into place helps treat the Vertigo. The repositioning maneuvers are specific to the position of crystals in the semicircular canals.
As the crystals move through the canals, they cause the eyes to flicker, which in medical words is called nystagmus. This random eye movements causes a patient to experience vertigo. At Asara Physical Therapy & Balance Clinic, we use Infrared video Frenzel glasses to evaluate the eye movements carefully. Using the goggles allows us to magnify and replay the eye movements. The precise location of crystals in specific canals can thus be determined, improving our diagnostic accuracy and treatment.
Our tested treatment approaches have led to speeding up the recovery and reducing the recurrence of symptoms sharply.
